BlackBerry data security concerns persist... In India
16/08/2010 By Horacio Araque ( Source: http://www.examiner.com/ )

South Florida users of BlackBerry heard news of more wrangling on security matters for the Canadian company abroad. Now, India seeks operators' access to BlackBerry telecoms encrypted services by late August; after they failed to block two multimedia telephone services suspect of safety concerns, a Government statement said on Thursday. After a meeting between the Indian Secretary of the Interior, GK Pillai, and representatives of security agencies at the Department of Telecoms; the government requested that two BlackBerry services submit to intelligence scrutiny by August 31.

"If a technical solution is not found by August 31, the Government will take steps to block these two "network services", the statement said. The services in question are: instant messaging services and email. In India, the operators which provide BlackBerry services have a legal responsibility to provide intelligence services access to all telephony services. No comment was immediately available from Research In Motion (RIM), the Canadian manufacturer of BlackBerry phones

A source at the Interior Ministry said to the AFP Thursday shortly after the meeting that it had ended "without result"." No decision has been made yet; and we will soon have further discussions ", said a source on condition of anonymity. Officials at the Interior Ministry said that India could set a deadline to RIM for access to encrypted data, showing that no official of the manufacturer was present at the meeting, described as "internal". Only the public operator BSNL participated.

The government fears terrorism. Mr. Robert Crow, a RIM senior official in charge of relations with government authorities, said he made a tour of "courtesy "to the Minister of Interior, P. Chidambaram. Currently, India has one million BlackBerry users, RIM's most promising niche abroad. Previously, the government warned that it would allow operators to provide telephone service only, and they could be intercepted by intelligence agencies.

India, which is plagued by separatist violence in Kashmir, at Pakistan border, and a Maoist rebellion in many states, is extremely sensitive to potential risks regarding technology. The government fears that insurgent groups will use the new means of communication to stage sabotage. In November 2008, a Islamic armed commando used mobile phones and satellites to coordinate attacks in Mumbai which left 166 deaths. As can be seen, folks, BlackBerry seem suspect of security concerns in some quarters. I hope they can solve the problems. Best wishes!
